Attendance Policy

To increase the likelihood of academic success, it is expected that every student attend class, on time, every day. Our Board of Education is committed to reducing chronic absenteeism in our district from 28% to 10% by 2029, learn more Attendance Policy. Parents and their student(s) are jointly responsible for ensuring the student’s regular attendance at school. See SLCSD Board 'Student Policy' S-4 for more information.

Students may be excused from school attendance for valid and legitimate reasons, including the following:

  • Physical or mental illness
  • Medical appointments
  • Family death/event
  • Observance of religious holidays
  • Approved school activity
  • Absence consistent with the student’s IEP or Section 504 accommodation plan
  • Competition in a rodeo sanctioned international, non-profit organization

Student’s absence(s) must be excused within one week of the absence(s). After one week, the parent/guardian must meet with a school administrator to determine whether the absence(s) may be excused.

Students with excused absences will be allowed the opportunity to make-up work and assignments, however, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work from their teachers.

In accordance with state law, a school administrator may issue a truancy notification to a student and the student’s parent/guardian for chronic unexcused absences.

  • 5-Day Letter = students who have at least 5 days of unexcused absences
  • 10-Day Letter = students who have 10 or more days of unexcused absences
  • 15-Day Letter = students who have 15 or more days of unexcused absences

Any student who needs to leave during the day must be checked out of school through the Office or you can call 10 minutes before, and we will call your student down. Students who leave class without being properly checked out may be considered truant and marked as such.
